What makes a team building activity actually work?
Most team building events fail for the same reason: they ask people to perform in front of each other rather than make something together. The best activities lower the stakes, give everyone an equal role, and produce a result that did not exist before. That sounds straightforward, but it rules out most of what passes for team building in Barcelona — and in most cities.
The format matters less than the dynamic it creates. If people leave feeling slightly more comfortable with each other than when they arrived, the activity has done its job.
Why a creative workshop beats the usual options
Escape rooms require a particular personality type to enjoy. Cooking classes can feel rushed and competitive. Cocktail-making evenings often become an excuse to drink rather than connect. A hands-on craft session works differently. The focus shifts to the work in front of you, conversations start without being prompted, and the people who are usually quiet in meetings are often the most confident makers in the room.
A team building workshop at TUTU Studio is built around tufting — the craft technique used to make handmade rugs. It is visual, tactile, and produces something each person keeps. That last point matters more than it might seem: it gives the session a permanence that a drinks round or a certificate does not.
What happens during a tufting team building session?
Each participant arrives at the studio, chooses a design idea and a colour palette, and then works on their own piece using a tufting gun — a hand-held tool that pushes yarn through a canvas backing, loop by loop, building up texture and pattern. Our instructors walk every person through the process from the first stitch. Nobody is expected to arrive with any prior knowledge.
The session runs for 2 to 3 hours at our studio at Carrer de la Diputació 341, Barcelona, in the heart of Eixample — accessible by metro and easy to reach from most of the city centre. Each person leaves at the end of the session with a piece in progress. The finished piece is ready to collect from the studio 14 to 20 days later, once it has been trimmed and the backing attached.
Who it is for and who it is not for
This activity works well for:
- Teams that want a shared creative experience without competitive pressure
- Groups with different levels of fitness or mobility — it is a seated, indoor activity
- International teams — sessions run in English and Spanish, and mixed-language groups are welcome
- Companies visiting Barcelona for a conference or off-site who want something local and memorable
- Teams where a shared, tangible result matters
It is not the right fit for teams seeking a leadership development programme, outdoor activities, or a format for more than 12 people in a single private session. If you have a larger group, get in touch and we will discuss what is possible.
